Quick answers

How to use the stair calculator

  1. Measure the total rise: the vertical distance from the finished lower floor to the finished upper floor or deck surface. Measure at the spot where the stairs will land, since floors are rarely level.
  2. Keep the maximum riser at 7.75 in unless your local code says otherwise. Lower risers make gentler stairs that take more floor space.
  3. Enter your tread depth. Treads are measured from the front edge of one step to the front edge of the next.

The formula

Risers = total rise ÷ max riser, rounded up. Riser height = total rise ÷ risers. Treads = risers − 1. Total run = treads × tread depth. Stringer length = √(rise² + run²).

Worked example: a 9 ft floor-to-floor rise

108 in ÷ 7.75 = 13.9, so 14 risers of 108 ÷ 14 = 7.71 in. That gives 13 treads; at 10 in each the stairs run 130 in (10 ft 10 in). The stringer is √(108² + 130²) = 169 in, about 14 ft 1 in.

Common questions

How many steps do I need for a 3 ft rise?

A 36 in rise ÷ 7.75 = 4.6, so you need 5 risers of 7.2 in each and 4 treads. With 10 in treads the stairs run 40 in.

What is the maximum riser height?

Under the International Residential Code (R311.7.5.1), riser height may not exceed 7 3/4 in. Minimum tread depth is 10 in (R311.7.5.2). Local codes can be stricter, so check with your building department.

How long should a stair stringer be?

Stringer length is the hypotenuse of the total rise and total run: √(rise² + run²). Buy lumber at least one size longer than the calculated length so you have room for the bottom cut and top connection.

What is a comfortable stair?

Carpenters use the rule of thumb that two risers plus one tread should come to about 24 to 25 in. A 7.5 in riser with a 10 in tread gives 25 in.
